LSP presents a blowing session from the embryonic days of free jazz in Birmingham. SPITTIN' DOWN BRASS is a series of solos over a conventional rhythm section. The band lacked solidarity (and rehearsal time) but compensated with spirited solos. The first and third of these are by the tenors: Warr has the traditional sound, at once coarse and polished; Lynock is intense, running the emotional gamut. Panton's alto work is in contrast with its edgy, boppish approach.
