The previous tracks have shown improvisation shaped by the musicians innate sense of form, relying on minimal structures. THIS WORLD, however, is a real marriage of composition and improvisation. Panton moves from the composed (in both senses) to the impassioned, creating variety and suspense without sacrificing consistency. The piece includes several almost self-contained statements, contrasting and flowing towards a final resolution, both formally and emotionally. Anthony Pither, a pianist more at home with Beethoven than the blues, must be commended for his handling of unaccustomed material.
